A day to remember our fallen…
Posted By margaret on May 28, 2011
It has become mostly a three day weekend, but Memorial Day is much more than BBQ, potato salad, and the beginning of summer vacation.
It’s a day to reflect on those having given their all in battles, men and women of the armed forces, and civilians fighting for freedoms. After the Civil War women began decorating the graves of their fallen, and it has continued to this day. Take a moment to reflect on our losses and gains by those brave freedom fighters.
I am proud to be the daughter of an Air Force military man and have expressed my thoughts and love of the military in quilts and videos DH and I have produced. Click to see them on this special day or click on the above image to read and see more about our salutes to the military.
A little history about the founding of Memorial Day from usmemorialday.org:
“Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war).”
