Great idea for a guy’s quilt!

What kind of quilt can I make for a guy? ribbit1Big guy, little guy? What colors, fabrics, threads would I use? But more important, what subject matter? Should there be a subject? Should the quilt be geometric shapes pieced together or fabric cut into specific shapes to appliqué? Hmmm…

For the longest time I was afraid of appliqué. Not really frightened, simply apprehensive. I didn’t have a clue how to sew the pieces onto the quilt and so I stayed away from appliqué. Finally, the curiosity got the best of me and I took a class in needleturn appliqué. How wonderful is that!

Needleturn is relaxing, you can take it anywhere and work on it for a few minutes at a time. No more wasted time sitting in doctor’s offices waiting for your name to be called. No sitting at the machine keeping the fabric in line. What fun!

Of course there are other methods of appliqué but currently my favorite is to use paper backed fusible web. Just draw the design or trace a pattern on the paper side and press it to the wrong side of the fabric and cut it out. How easy!

Place the pieces in position and press. Next just zig zag around the edges and you’ve completed the quilt top. That was quick! (more…)
